Desert Fathers Uranium Daughters $12.99 Award-winning poet Debora Greger grew up in Washington near the site of the Hanford atomic plant which unbeknownst to its workers manufactured plutonium for the bomb dropped on Nagasaki. "The high school team was named the Bombers " she writes. "The school ring had a mushroom cloud on it." In Desert Fathers Uranium Daughters she uses what The Nation has characterized as her "deadpan wit intelligence and marvelous insight" to explore the legacy of a Catholic girlhood spent in a landscape where "even the dust though we didn"t know it then was radioactive." "Call us out of the animal " Greger writes invoking the ghost of a poet conjured in "Nights of 1995 " in what could be construed as the motto of a collection filled with what Poetry called "priceless instants where the mundane flares up into the miraculous."Award-winning poet Debora Greger grew up in Washington near the site of the Hanford atomic plant which unbeknownst to its workers manufactured plutonium for the bomb dropped on Nagasaki. An Airplane Was My Burro: The Memoirs Of A Venturesome Geologist $14.64 The author of this memoir is a retired Economic Geologist who was privileged to work for several mining companies in the fields of metals and energy. He was also employed by the Illinois State Geological Survey and by the Foreign Section of the US Geological Survey and taught one year at The Wisconsin School of Mines between jobs. His first love was minerals exploration and he was very successful as he found a major reserve of zinc in SW Wisconsin, a very good uranium mine in New Mexico and several large strip coal reserves in the Western and Central United States. His ability as an airplane pilot served him well, particularly in his work on western coals. The variety of his work experience makes for numerous interesting stories and many insightful geological observations. He was about to embark on a career as a pitcher in professional baseball when he received a scholarship to the University of Chicago and discovered geology. |

Award Ceremonies $43.34 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Public Eye, held every year since 2000, is a counter-event to the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. The Public Eye celebrated its ten-year anniversary on 28 January 2009. The project involves non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from around the world and is coordinated by Swiss organizations Berne Declaration (BD) and Greenpeace Switzerland. The Public Eye is a platform for substantial criticism of “purely profit-oriented globalization. The focus of the Public Eye Awards since 2005 has been on Corporate Social Responsibility. In 2009, the Positive category was for the first time awarded for a courageous employee for his or her exemplary contributions. In 2009, awards will once again be given in the categories Global, Swiss, Positive and People. The Positive Award is meant to honor exemplary employees. For the Peoples Award, first presented in 2008, a number of firms are nominated, and a winner will be chosen on the Public Eye’s website from 15 to 27 January 2009. Melanie Winiger at the Public Eye Awards 2008,© nitsch.ch Both the Peoples Award and the Global Award were given to French state-owned Areva for the suppression of true health conditions of uranium mine workers at subsidiaries Somaïr and Cominak in northern Niger. Therefore, the hospitals would diagnose patients with HIV when they were actually displaying symptoms of cancer caused by radioactive contamination of air, water and soil. Glencore was honored for its opaque business practices and unacceptable labor rights in Colombian coal mines. The Positive Award went to Hess Natur, Germanys largest mail-order house for natural fabrics, for its social and ecological involvement that stresses fair trade of its raw materials. Bridgestone received the Global … More: |

From the Ground Up: A History of Mining in Utah $34.95 Despite mining’s multidimensional role in the history of Utah since Euro-american settlement, there has never been a book that surveyed and contextualized its impact. From the Ground Up fill that gap with a collection of essays by leading Utah historians and geologists. Essays here address the geology of the state, the economic history of mining in Utah, and the lore of mines and miners. Additionally, the book reviews a handul of particularly significant mineral industries—saline, coal, uranium, and beryllium—and surveys important hard-rock mining regions of the state. |

Hardwater $1.97 Hoback flees to Wyoming to escape the big city violence that cost him his wife and almost turned him into a killer. Life is good in Hardwater until somebody butchers three people like deer, packs their bodies with uranium ore, and sends Hoback a poem, challenging him to stop the killing. The poet reveals an intimate knowledge of Hoback’s violent past—and a perverse and terrifying interest in his son. This haunting tale of murder, betrayal, and a father’s love takes place in a Wyoming uranium-mining town set in the middle of the wildest, most beautiful country south of Alaska.”A worthy winner of the George Garrett Fiction Prize, Hardwater has style, pace and punch. Its picture of the contemporary American West is on the money. Every turn of the page leaves a reader wondering, What next?, both in the story and in Sherwood’s career.”—Mike Mewshaw “Steve Sherwood’s Hardwater has everything you’d want in a thriller, not the least of which is a richly evocative sense of place: the high left corner of Wyoming up near Yellowstone, in a town where failed uranium mines have left the bitter taste of failure in white men’s mouths and the area’s resident reservation Shoshones and Arapahos find themselves literally at war with farmers and ranchers over water rights. When the editor of the local rag there gets hot on the trail of a serial killer or a poet with a macabre sense of humor, you have got a bang-on good contemporary Western.”—C. W. Smith Author Biography: STEVE SHERWOOD, director of the William L. Adams Center for Writing at TCU, has published essays and fiction in numerous magazines and journals. With Christina Murphy he edited the St. Martin’s Sourcebook for Writing Tutors (1995) and with Murphy and Joe Law he compiled Writing Centers: An Annotated Bibliography (Greenwood Press, 1996). |

History of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway $29.95 In 1859, Cyrus K. Holliday envisioned a railroad that would run from Kansas to the Pacific, increasing the commerce and prosperity of the nation. With farsighted investors and shrewd management, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad grew from Holliday’s idea into a model of the modern, rapid, and efficient railroad. There were many growing pains. Rustlers, thieves, and desperadoes were as thick as the cattle in Kansas when the first rails were laid. When a conductor, toting a pistol, asked a grizzled prospector where he was heading, the old man replied, “Hell.” “That’s 65¢ and get off at Dodge,” the weary conductor declared.Once built with rails from Wales laid on ties of oak and walnut, the railroad survived the economic and climatic hardships of the late nineteenth century, and eventually extended from Chicago to San Francisco, with over 12,000 miles of track and substantial holdings in oil fields, timber land, uranium mines, pipe lines, and real estate. |

J. Robert Oppenheimer, the Cold War, and the Atomic West $24.95 In 1922, the teenage son of a Jewish immigrant ventured from Manhattan to New Mexico for his health. It was the first of many trips to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, a western retreat where J. Robert Oppenheimer would eventually hold pathbreaking discussions with world-renowned scientists about atomic physics. Oppenheimer came to feel at home in the American West, and while extensive studies have been made of the man, this is the first book to explicitly link him with the region. J. Robert Oppenheimer, the Cold War, and the Atomic West explores how the West influenced Oppenheimer as a scientist and as a person—and the role he played in influencing it.Jon Hunner’s concise account of Oppenheimer’s life and the emergence of an Atomic West distills a vast literature for students and general readers. In this brisk, engaging biography, the author recounts how Oppenheimer helped locate the atomic weapons research lab at Los Alamos, New Mexico, and helped establish leading physics departments at the University of California–Berkeley and Caltech. By taking part in moving atomic physics west of the Mississippi, Oppenheimer bolstered the establishment of research labs, uranium mines, nuclear reactors, and more, bringing talented people—and billions of dollars in federal contracts—to the region.Interwoven into this atomic tale are insights into the physicist’s troubled growing-up years, his marriage and family life, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and Oppenheimer’s eventual downfall. After the first atomic bomb burst over the New Mexican desert in 1945 and as the Cold War developed, the American myth of the Wild West expanded to encompass atomic sheriffs saving the world for democracy—even as powerful opponents began questioning Oppenheimer’s place in that story. Against the backdrop of the physicist’s life twining with the region’s history, Hunner explores the promise and peril of the |

Excerpt: Colorado’s most significant battles between labor and capital occurred primarily between miners and mine operators. In these battles the state government, with one clear exception, always took the side of the mine operators. Additional participants in Colorado’s labor struggles have included the National Guard, often informally called the militia; private contractors such as the Pinkertons, Baldwin-Felts, and Thiel detective agencies; and various labor entities, employers’ organizations such as the Mine Owners’ Associations, and vigilante groups and employer-sponsored citizens groups, such as the Citizens’ Alliance. The series of incidents that have most frequently been referred to as the Colorado Labor Wars involved a struggle between the Western Federation of Miners (WFM) and the mine operators, particularly the Cripple Creek Mine Owners’ Association (CCMOA), during the period from 1903 to 1904. Like so many other fights between the miners and the owners of the mines, this was a brutal and bloody period in Colorado’s history. In 1880, miners represented 29 percent o… More: |

Seven For The Run $25.92 “For a political prisoner, an attempt to escape from the uranium mines was treated in the communist judicial system as high treason. A political prisoner was obviously going divulge information about the mines to the American and British intelligence services. This was high treason. High treason earned the ‘highest penalty’, as it was called in the courts. The highest penalty was hanging.” “Seven for the Run” is the gripping, true story of a daring escape from a communist prison camp during the height of the Cold War. Sensitively and movingly told by one of the escapees, Ivan PluhaÅ™, the narrative is a suspenseful account of the discipline, careful planning, and wily ingenuity of a cadre of political prisoners desperate to escape long terms of imprisonment in a communist uranium mine in western Czechoslovakia. PluhaÅ™ tells the harrowing story of his arrest, interrogation, and imprisonment for underground activities against the Soviet-backed Marxist regime. |
