A Plague Year $10.99 It starts small, with petty thefts of cleaning supplies and Sudafed from the supermarket where Tom works. But the plague picks up speed, tearing through his town with a ferocity and velocity that surprises everyone. By year’s end there will be ruined, hollow people on every street corner. Meth will unmake the lives of friends and teachers and parents. It will fill the prisons, and the morgues.Tom has always been focused on getting out of his depressing coal-mining town, on escaping to a college somewhere sunny and far away. But as bits of his childhood erode around him, he finds it’s not so easy to let go. When home and family are a lost cause, do you turn your back? Or are some lost causes worth fighting for? |

Minerals And Mining Nova Scotia $38.98 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:ADDED IMPORTANCE OF COAL. It is probable that not one individual in ten, of the inhabitants of a country, not one in five even of those whose present and future is more or less bound up with the production of coal, has anything like a full or clear conception of the wonderful, indeed it may be said, of the marvellous part coal has played, is playing, in the greatest war the world ever saw. Some know that coal supplies power that makes transportation of huge bodies of men, munitions and guns possible, who know little or nothing of the part it plays in the manufacture of the deadliest explosives. Said one in an address lately, “There was a time—and it is only a century since — when practically the one thing needed for an army was food. When the lord on the hill wanted to fight his rival, to take a slice of his territory away, he had to concern himself with having a certain number of fighting men, and then -with supplying them with food. War is now an industrial game; and the foundation of industry, as we know it now, is coal. And so it is that you are at the very root and foundation of the great war industry. Unless we have an abundance, or at least a sufficiency, of coal, war cannot be carried on.” Some flippantly may say, “Oh, yes, we realize fully that it has grown in importance from its increased cost.” It is possible that some judge of its value only by its increased price, and yet coal must not be valued by the price it costs. One cannot arrive at the true value of coal by what it costs in the market. Coal is the agent that makes possible the industrial development of our province, just as it underlies the prosperity of the most advanced countries in the world, at the present time. If Nova Scotia, as it is hoped, is to become really the workshop of our great |

The Day After Tomorrow: Images of Our Earth in Crisis $18.46 As seen on The Today Show!  The Day After Tomorrow takes readers on a journey to bear witness to the environmental destruction that is currently plaguing our planet; from a forest in West Virginia devastated by mountaintop removal mining, to a region in Florida left in ruins by the phosphate mining industry, J. Henry Fair presents hard evidence that our unchecked consumerism is leading the way in the destruction of our planet, one natural resource at a time. Primarily through the use of aerial photography, Fair captures spellbinding vistas of pools of toxic hog waste, streams of paper mill runoff, and the remains of hollowed-out mountains. These environmental abstractions lure the viewer in with unique asymmetrical shapes and striking colors; however, fascination quickly turns to horror, as the viewer realizes what lurks beneath the surface of the image. Fair is a consummate environmentalist and after years as a corporate and portrait photographer he turned his lens on the industries that sustain us—oil, fertilizer, coal, and factory farming, to name a few—eager to uncover the dirty little secrets that he knew were well hidden there. It turns out the secrets, and the “dirt” they produce, are far too large to hide. For example: the factory farming industry is responsible for one of the largest environmental disasters in history, wherein a hog waste lagoon burst, causing 25 million gallons of highly toxic sludge to flood the New River in North Carolina, killing ecosystems, animals, and infecting water supplies.
