An assured inspiring debut which demonstrates the power of the human spirit to give comfort in times of hardship. In 1931 Carbon Hill a small Alabama coal-mining town nine-year-old Tess Moore watches from the darkness of her back porch as a strange woman lifts the cover off the family well and tosses a baby in without a word. It is the height of the Depression; while Tess"s father Albert performs backbreaking and dangerous work at the mine her mother Leta makes do without meat on her table. But the family are luckier than most; the food they can grow on their plot of land has so far saved them from the crippling poverty and near-starvation that besets their neighbours. As Tess tries to unravel the mystery of the woman at the well a portrait emerges of a family and a community struggling to survive the darkest of times. Resonant vivid and clear-eyed in its portrayal of both the best and the worst of human nature The Well and the Mine is a stunning novel about love hope and the importance of doing the right thing. An assured inspiring debut which demonstrates the power of the human spirit to give comfort in times of hardship. Whether shes creating incomparable love stories of passion and redemption or breathtaking tales of romantic suspense there is simply no finer storyteller at work today than the phenomenal New York Times bestseller Elizabeth Lowell. The bastard son of a viscount and a Cheyenne shamans daughter Wolfe Lonetree agrees to rescue the pampered Lady Jessica from an unwanted impending wedding — but only if she will be his wife. Naive and shockingly innocent Lady Jessica Charteris tricked a rugged handsome stranger into a marriage in name only in order to escape a union with a vile British lord. Totally unprepared for the hardships awaiting her in America she is terrified by the prospect of life in the harsh and magnificent land at the edge of the Rockies. But even more frightening is Wolfe himself — a man whose raw sensuality leaves her breathless. Her proud virile new "husband" is not one to be trifled with nor will he be denied what his heart fervently desires — for only in Wolfe Lonetrees arms can Jessica truly learn the unparalleled joy of becoming the right mans woman.

Ghost In A Coal Mine II

Ghost In A Coal Mine II

$7.79

Jimmy called me about two weeks after we help them at the mine up on the hill, they had 14 people killed in an explosion under their mine, that happen back in 1945 but it wasn’t a mine explosion, they killed 14 kids that worked in that mine and tried to make it look like it was an explosion. So we had to go back in their and try to find all of them but with out the help of Charlie, we never would have found them because Charlie come through the ground to get help after 20 years, Charlie was a ghost. So when Jimmy called me it kind of surprised me because I hadn’t talk to him in awhile but he said we need some help on this one. I said help on what, he said looks like another place they say they have ghost in it. I said you have got to be kidding me, where are these things coming from, he said it looks like they are telling the others who helps them the last time, and so you got elected to come to them. Me, it’s your job to help those people; I don’t work in there any more. I ask him has Hank got back from school yet, he said yes and he can’t do any thing with them. They are mean, very mean. And where are they at, he said in West Virginia, I ask him are you going to be there this time with us, I do want Hank their. Jimmy told me we can have any one that I want to be there. I ask him can you get Charlie, He said now there are some things I can’t do, if I could bring him back from the dead I would sure have him there helping you. I said yeah I would to, when do you want me there, tomorrow morning if you can get their. Ok Have my crew there, we might need them.

Coover’s best-known work, The Public Burning, deals with the case of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg in terms that have been called magic realism. 'Call Me Hank': A Sto:lo Man's Reflections on Logging, Living, and Growing Old

‘Call Me Hank’: A Sto:lo Man’s Reflections on Logging, Living, and Growing Old

$29.95

‘My name is Henry George Pennier and if you want to be a friend of mine please you will call me Hank.’ So begins ‘Call Me Hank,’ the autobiography of Hank Pennier (1904-1991): logger, storyteller, and self-described ‘halfbreed.’ In this work, Pennier offers thoughtful reflections on growing up as a non-status Aboriginal person on or near a Stó:lõ reserve, searching for work of all kinds during hard times as a young man, and working as a logger through the depression of the 1930s up to his retirement. Known only to a small local audience when it was first published in 1972, this expanded edition of Pennier’s autobiography provides poignant political commentary on issues of race, labour, and life through the eyes of a retired West Coast Native logger. ‘Call Me Hank’ is an engaging and often humorous read that makes an important contribution to a host of contemporary discourses in Canada, including discussions about the nature and value of Aboriginal identity. To Hank’s original manuscript, Keith Carlson and Kristina Fagan have added a scholarly introduction situating Hank’s writing within historical, literary, and cultural contexts, exploring his ideas and writing style, and offering further information about his life. A map of place names mentioned by Hank, a diagram of a steam logging operation, a glossary of logging terms, and sixteen photographs provide practical and historical complements to Pennier’s original lively personal narrative.Pennier’s book preceded the proliferation of Aboriginal writing that began with the publication of Maria Campbell’s Halfbreed in 1973 and provides a markedly different view of Aboriginal life than other writings of the period. It also documents important aspects of Aboriginal participation in the wage labour economy that have been overlooked by historians, and offers a unique reflection on masculinity, government policy, and industrialization.

100 Days, 100 Nights [Promo Version]

100 Days, 100 Nights [Promo Version]

$19.98

Sharon Jones, the big-voiced lead singer of the Dap-Kings — a band that recently began making its name known outside those enthusiasts of the Daptone label and the reaches of the soul community thanks to appearances with Amy Winehouse and work for Mark Ronson, including a version of Dylan’s “Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine)” — is no music-world neophyte. 100 Days, 100 Nights is just her third full-length with the Dap-Kings, but Jones has been singing on and off since the 1970s, without much of a break until she began working with her current label. Meaning, she’s certainly paid her dues, and she has enough life experience behind her voice to make the words she sings sound that much truer. Because soul music — and this isn’t neo-soul, or contemporary R&B, but straight-up Stax and Motown brassy soul — is so much more than the actual lyrics themselves; it’s about the inflection and emotion that the vocalist is able to exude, and Jones proves herself to be master of that, moving from coy to romantic to defiant easily and believably. The album is much smoother, even gentler, than her previous releases, and though the Dap-Kings still power their way through the ten songs with bright horn licks, inspired drumming, and staccato guitar lines, there’s a deeper, bluesier edge to the record, heard in “Let Them Knock” or the slower “Humble Me.” “Don’t let me forget who I am,” Jones croons in the latter, her voice rising to a sweet falsetto at the end of the phrase. It’s a very clean record, not over-produced but well produced, with a lot of great pop moments tucked in between the brassier, funkier bits. The title track relies on a sultry organ and a minor vamp to make its point, while “Something’s Changed” uses strings and punctuated sax and bass as the singer drops a bit of her lungs out, bringing a kind of immediacy to her words, as if the actuality of the situation around her hasn’t quite set in enough for her to wail about it, as if she’s just …

24 Super Hits

24 Super Hits

$12.98

The problem with naming your compilation 24 Super Hits is that quibblers will be quick to note that quite a few of these tracks weren’t hits at all, while the pedants will point out that they at least weren’t hits for Delroy Wilson. “Stick by Me” was indeed a smash, but for John Holt; likewise, “Beat Down Babylon” was a cultural classic that smashed up the Jamaican chart for Junior Byles and, needless to say, “I’m Still Waiting” was a triumph for Bob Marley & the Wailers. But enough griping — the title may be somewhat inaccurate, but the two-dozen numbers within are of such high caliber that it’s petulant to complain. Take those covers: Wilson does them proud, and he does an equally fabulous job with American hits, from his soulful rendition of the Four Tops’ “It’s the Same Old Song” to his emotive take on Tyrone Evans’ “Can I Change My Mind,” his sublime version of the Isley Brothers’ “This Old Heart of Mine,” and his powerful take on the Beltones’ “No More Heartaches.” Then again, this album is filled with powerful numbers, whether written by others or Wilson himself. There are potent political numbers like “Better Must Come,” which the Jamaican People’s National Party rode to ballot victory in 1972, the driving “You Keep on Running,” the emotional tour de force “Here Come the Heartaches,” and the suave “Cool Operator” (the song that gave Wilson his nickname). They are smash hits, one and all, but gems that are just as brilliant can be found among the somewhat lesser-known numbers, like the stunning deep soul performance delivered on “Any Heart Can Be Broken”; the torn-to-shreds-by-love “I Can’t Explain”; the adamant “They Can’t Stop Me”; and “Everyone Must be Judge,” stuffed with Wilson’s cultural message. So, not all of Wilson’s hits by a long shot, but a superb collection of his ’70s work regardless. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, Rovi

48 POEMS: Reflections Of A Poet

48 POEMS: Reflections Of A Poet

$64.61

48 POEMS is a highly stylized literary composition of electrifying poems, and may well be the most complete, comprehensive, and versatile book of its kind. There are 48 poems encompassing eight different genres: each genre containing six poems. The genres include: romantic, dramatic, Thanksgiving, tragic, comedic, ironic, Christmas, and children. Subtitled “Reflections Of A Poet,” because it gives an in-depth look into the heart, mind, and soul of one of North America’s “purest writers” of our time, who is bound only by the limits of his imagination and creativity. Romantic: Every man should read “Love Me With Your Heart” to his love one at least once. Dramatic: “You Can’t Break My Spirit” is the quintessential story of the black man’s conquest over slavery. Thanksgiving … “Thank You For Giving” will warm your heart as if it was a flaming charcoal on a cool summer night. Tragic: Tragedy… like death is a constant reminder of our immortality and “Untimely Death” will evoke tears and drown your eyes with compassion. Comedic: “Ugly Like A Truck” begs for laughter as this woman describes her man as “Ugly Like A Truck.” Ironic: nothing expresses irony like this prophecy, “A Messiah Is Coming” directed at President Barrack Obama. There’s the poem “One Nation Under Oprah” which cleverly frames Oprah Winfrey’s rise from the depths of the Mississippi Delta to the queen of talk show television, and her all girls’ school in South Africa. Christmas: There is no other poem that expresses “Christmastime In New York City” like this poem. The children’s genre … seemingly every child claims to have had “A Fly In My Soup.” 48 POEMS is a gold mine of love and language that is nothing short of a brilliant literary work that promotes literacy, academics and advances scholarship into the next millennium.

In presenting the following pages for consideration of the farmers of the country, the subscriber has confined himself strictly to matters selected from English papers, which will speak for itself. As a short explanation from me will be looked for, I will merely state, that at the trial in presence of the Exhibition Jury, Mr. McCormick’s machine was operated by an experienced hand sent from the United States, while mine was managed by English laborers of the lower class, who were total strangers to it, and had never seen it in operation. The trial was made in unripe wheat on a rainy day. My machine was very improperly adjusted for the work and wrongly put together, in consequence of which the ignorant raker failed to deliver the sheaves, and it stopped as a matter of course, and was immediately laid aside, after cutting but a few feet. My machine was never tried in presence of that Jury by any other hands, or in’ any other condition, myself not being in England. . It was on such a trial that the Exhibition medal was disposed of, and with what justice the reader can judge by reading the following pages. On my arrival in England I took my machine into the field that it might work its way into public favor, as it best could. After being exhibited in several places, its rising fame appeared to produce some effect, as it will appear by the following in the Windsor and Eaton Express, of Nov. 8, 1851: Alluding to the astonishing and unexpected performance of my Reaper, it says:—By this unlocked for turn of events, the proprietors of M’Cormick’s machine found that their supremacy was no longer undisputed, and that the necessity ivas laid upon thcm to look to their laurels ; they therefore came boldly forward, and threw

A Clearing in the Distance: Frederick Law Olmsted and America in the 19th Century By Witold Rybczynski

A Clearing in the Distance: Frederick Law Olmsted and America in the 19th Century By Witold Rybczynski

$63

In a brilliant collaboration between writer and subject, Witold Rybczynski, the bestselling author of Home and City Life, illuminates Frederick Law Olmsted’s role as a major cultural figure at the epicenter of nineteenth-century American history.
We know Olmsted through the physical legacy of his stunning landscapes — among them, New York’s Central Park, California’s Stanford University campus, and Boston’s Back Bay Fens. But Olmsted’s contemporaries knew a man of even more extraordinarily diverse talents. Born in 1822, he traveled to China on a merchant ship at the age of twenty-one. He cofounded The Nation magazine and was an early voice against slavery. He managed California’s largest gold mine and, during the Civil War, served as the executive secretary to the United States Sanitary Commission, the precursor of the Red Cross.
Rybczynski’s passion for his subject and his understanding of Olmsted’s immense complexity and accomplishments make his book a triumphant work. In A Clearing in the Distance, the story of a great nineteenth-century American becomes an intellectual adventure.

A Coal Miner’s Family at Mooseheart

A Coal Miner’s Family at Mooseheart describes the lives of Homer Rhodes’ widow and children at Mooseheart, IL, from 1919-1939. An orphan’s home-school, which still operates, Mooseheart is arguably one of the most unusual child care programs of the 20th Century. This story begins with my family’s arrival at Mooseheart and my rough introduction to the boys’ codes of behavior. I report on how a Demerit system was replaced by a Merit system that worked well for 1,300 students living in this community which absolutely prohibited corporal punishment. Also I explain our daily routines.Further sections illustrate how the Founder’s idealistic vision worked for our family and the students we knew: 1) how Blanche and her family adopt Earl and Carolyn Guinn, who lost both parents, 2) how students play and compete as the Mooseheart Spirit emerges, 3) how they can work to earn and spend their own money, 4) how they must learn a skilled trade, 5) how they may get a high school diploma –if they can pass the courses, 6) how they worship in the faith of their parents, 7) how they dance and romance, 8) how they dream, strive, become lonesome, suffer growing pains, 9) how they become ambitious, develop enough courage to leave Mooseheart to scatter and settle; 10) And finally, how they return to their very special utopia and wonder whether they can ever repay the Moose.Since this is a family memoir, I attach sections about our life before Mooseheart. I record what we know about our parents, Blanche Porter and, Homer Rhodes, and about Carrie Thomas, our mother’s birth mother. I attach also a section about Spruce Knob, WV, and the Elk Lick Coal Company when Homer Rhodes was Superintendent of the mine there from 1919 until he died in 1925.

Such was Ronald Campion, as he stood painting with a rapid bold action, and an air of entire absorption in his work, from which he only paused to give some slightly impatient direction to the model who stood and shivered in classical costume on his right, for it was cold work keeping the pose when the stove had been allowed to go out for lack of attention. So much engrossed was he, that he did not look round when the door which communicated with the house opened, and an elderly man with a cross-grained walnut- coloured face made his appearance. ‘ Mister Babcock to see you, sir,’ he announced with a certain grim relish, as he stood at the top of the short flight of steps. Campion muttered something which did not sound like delight. ‘ Hang it, Bales, couldn’t you tell him I was busy,’ he said. ‘ Just precisely what I did tell him,’ said Bales, with nn injured air; ‘but it wasn’t no use; he’s a-comin’in, he is—wants to see you on important business, ‘cordin’ to him.’ Bales was an old soldier who had been a professional model for some years, and now acted as Campion’s factotum. His chief characteristic was a systematic disbelief in everything and everybody, which be seldom lost a chance of expressing. As he spoke he stood aside to make way for the visitor, who seemed to have no misgivings as to his welcome. ‘ Well, my dear fellow, how are you ? Hardat it, as usual, I see. A Field Guide to the Birds of Southwestern India

$63.97

A Forgotten Horseman

A Forgotten Horseman

$20.71

When I was sixteen, I held my dad’s hands while on my knees pleading to God for him not to die. “Dad,dad, dad,” I cried out, as he lay there on his back with his hands and fingers in firm position grasping the reins of a five gait mare.He was in a place of contentment as he spoke,”Whoa mare, that’s a girl!” and made those familiar clicking sounds I often heard when I was a little boy watching him ride the horses everyday in the summer. Then in a calm moment, with his hands gently relaxed in mine, his face revealed a soft smile and he took his last breath and his last ride.My father, Thomas Downing was a horse trainer, one of the forgotten horsemen who was raised in the Saddlebred kingdom of North Middletown Kentucky. He had a natural, uncanny and remarkable gift of relating to horses, proven by the trust and confidence exhibited by the horses toward him. Although my dad was a man of few words, his true voice, a voice that spoke volumes, was spoken within his work and accomplishments with the horses he trained. He often preferred to spend time with the horses over most people and it was that bond which enabled him to train the horses so effectively. This book is about a summer weekend I spent as a ten year old boy helping my father at a horse show and the invaluable lessons of life I learned from my dad and his fellow forgotten horsemen, who a contemporary of theirs called them, ” Great Men with Great Horses”. It was over this weekend I would learn more about my father, horses, and life than I ever thought imaginable.

A wonderful resource for the novice as well as the specialist, a vast mine of up-to-date information. –Michel-Andre Bossy, editor of Medieval Debate Poetry This work will certainly be a must for every scholar working on the troubadours, and perhaps also for non-specialist medievalists. Its attention to the nitty-gritty of scholarship–manuscripts, editing, language, rhetoric, etc.–is what makes it so unique and helpful. Nurses and doctors raced to work on me.”She’s coding!” one nurse yelled. “She’s not breathing and we don’t have a pulse!”Although my lifeless body was being assaulted by attempts to start my heart back up, I wasn’t concerned. I was still, placid, and unable to do anything. It was like I was outside my body, looking down. Even though a steady calmness held me from fear, one thing was sure to me: I knew I was dying. In September 2001, Cindy Valenti-Scinto, a healthy young woman, suffered a heart attack that was only the beginning of a grueling seven-year journey through heart disease. Four years later, after forty operations and several brushes with death, Cindy received a miraculous heart transplant that saved her life.Cindy relied on the Lord as her strength through all the trials and pain, providing her many opportunities to share His love with others. Her story is not only inspiring-it shows how trust in God provides the strength to get through any “disease” of the heart. Whether you are facing illness, divorce, loss, or another difficult situation, you will find A Heart Like Mine beats with the encouragement you need to seek God’s will in the midst of turmoil.”Pain never touches just our bodies. From the dentist’s drill to the surgeon’s scalpel, pain and sickness stick their uninvited noses into our deep places. Cindy Scinto has lived long in valleys none of us hope to ever see and shares one pearl of great price that all of us need-hope. For all who suffer or who hold the hand of one suffering, this book can be strong stuff. But then, most good medicine is.”-Dave Swartz, author, Dancing With Broken Bones, The Magnificent Obsession, and Embracing God: Drawing Closer to the God Who Loves You”Impacting and filled with profound, scriptural insight, and spiritual depth gained through years of severe testing, Cindy writes A Heart Like Mine for every person who has ever wondered about God’s will and suffering. What exactly…is your image of God? Is there a specific way you see Jesus? Have you created a God box? Are your images and ideas formed by teachers…text books …theologians …or even the opinions of some misinformed individuals? Theological ambiguity can confuse the simplicity of the good news of Jesus Christ. Theologs, pastors, and teachers all have their rightful and necessary place in God’s work.”Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” The words of Jesus found in Matt. 11:28-30I live by the words of a former pastor of mine named Max Cadenhead. After every single sermon he preached he said: “You are responsible to God for what you learn. Do not take my word as gospel. Go home and check it out for yourself.”I’m 44 years old. I live in mountains of Colorado with my loving wife Gail. I attend Rocky Mountain Calvary Church in Colorado Springs. I am a truck driver by occupation and a writer of words by God.
