Baby Doe Tabor: The Madwoman in the Cabin

Baby Doe Tabor: The Madwoman in the Cabin

$19.95

Elizabeth “Baby Doe” McCourt Tabor (1854-1935) resided at the center of a real-life western drama of truly mythic dimensions. Indeed, her story formed the basis of The Ballad of Baby Doe, the second-most-produced American opera. “Baby Doe” was already a scandalous figure when she first met Horace Tabor in 1879. Infatuated with the much younger woman, the Colorado silver magnate married her and made her a wealthy woman. But in 1893, a disastrous decline in the price of silver obliterated Tabor’s fortune in a matter of months. He died six years later, leaving his wife and two daughters with an inactive mine and a hopeless future. “Baby Doe” survived her husband for 35 years, chained to his memory and increasingly deluded. This striking biography recalls the rags-to-riches-to-rags story of the madwoman in the cabin.

Cold Starry Night: An Artist's Memoir

Cold Starry Night: An Artist’s Memoir

$1.99

Young Claire Fejes was a promising sculptor and painter in New York City in 1946 when her husband gave in to "gold fever." She held the unconventional view that her career was as important as his. But in those days, a woman followed her husband, so Claire did – to Fairbanks, last stop on the Alaska Railroad, in the heart of the immense northern territory, where Joe Fejes intended to mine for gold. In a refreshingly candid memoir, Claire describes a remote outpost where the young couple joins a hardy breed of Alaskans who transform loneliness into powerful friendships and where the artist overcomes soul-aching cultural isolation. Fairbanks is populated by characters such as the happy Finnish couple who adopt Claire and Joe; the lively Eva McGown, a one-woman social-service agency who wears a potent violet purfume and speaks with a sweet Irish brogue; and Fabian Carey, the trapper who loves the wilderness as much as he does opera, literature, and art. Written from the heart, this memoir of post-war Alaska has become a classic with its nostalgic reflections of a simpler time.

Excerpt: Light of Day, Day of Darkness is the second (one-track) studio album by the Norwegian progressive metal band, Green Carnation. The album was composed, written and arranged by founding member Terje Vik Schei (a.k.a. Tchort). It was released by The End Records on January 8, 2002. It is composed of a single 60-minute track. Also, the album was largely inspired by the birth of Tchort’s son. Musically, Light of Day, Day of Darkness is pure progressive metal. In this album, the band combines many different instruments, not commonly used in metal, to create an original soundscape. It is said that 600 different samples were used in the editing of the song. The album shows some death metal twinges from their roots with Kjetil Nordhus occasionally using death growls and Anders Kobro implementing occasional blast beats as well. Insulated Cafetiere

Insulated Cafetiere

$31.5

These are the best Cafetieres, they beat the glass ones hands down and stay hot for ages. They look so great on the breakfast table and when you eat outside you will be thankfull to have lovely hot coffee for even longer than it takes to read the papers! American designed insulated Cafetieres that stay hot for up to 3 hours. They are not completely sealed as they are open at the pouring spout. Fantastic for using outside. I have taken mine to the Opera and Point to Points. They have a rubber base so are also great to take on a Boat, Caravan or Barge. This item is not boxed. 28oz

Puccini & the Girl: History and Reception of the Girl of the Golden West

Puccini & the Girl: History and Reception of the Girl of the Golden West

$24.12

Set in the American West during the California Gold Rush, La fanciulla del West marked a significant departure from Giacomo Puccini’s previous and best- known works. Puccini and the Girl is the first book to explore this important but often misunderstood opera that became the earliest work by a major European composer to receive an American premiere when it opened at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House in 1910. Adapted from American playwright David Belasco’s Broadway production, The Girl of the Golden West, Fanciulla was Puccini’s most consciously modern work, and its Met debut received mixed reviews. Annie J. Randall and Rosalind Gray Davis base their account of its creation on previously unknown letters from Puccini to his main librettist, Carlo Zangarini. They mine musical materials, newspaper accounts, and rare photographs and illustrations to tell the full story of this controversial opera. Puccini and the Girl considers the production and reception of Puccini’s cowboy opera in the light of contemporary criticism, providing both fascinating insight into its history and a look to the future as its centenary approaches. Engrossing. . . . An eminently readable, ideally direct and information-packed book. William Fregosi, Opera Today

Every family has a story. Every story, eventually, must be told. For most of their lives, Julian Perel and his sister, Paula, lived in a house cast in silence, witnesses to a father struggling with a devastating secret too painful to share. Though their father took his demons to the grave, his past refuses to rest. As adults, brother and sister struggle to find their voices. A scientist governed by numbers and logic, Julian now lives an ordered life of routine and seclusion. My father gave up his language and his homeland. But he carried his sadness with him, under his skin. It was mine now. In contrast, Paula has entered the world as eagerly as Julian retracts from it. An aspiring opera singer, she is always moving, buoyant with sound. Singing was the only gift I could offer to my father. I filled the house with music. I tried to give him joy. . . .Yet both their lives begin to change on a Wednesday, miercoles, the day that sounds like miracles. Before embarking on a European opera tour, Paula asks her housekeeper, Sola, to stay at her place–and to look after Julian in the apartment above. Yet Sola, too, has a story. I want to clean myself like the window of a house, make myself clear for things to pass through. Flat and quiet. As Paula uncovers pieces of her father’s early life in Budapest and the horrifying truth of his past, Julian bears witness to Sola’s story–revelations that help all three learn how to both surrender and revere the shadows that have followed them for so long. The Speed of Light is a powerful debut about three unforgettable souls who overcome thereconnect with one another and the world around them. In an extraordinary accomplishment, Elizabeth Rosner has created a novel of love and redemption that proves the pain of the untold story is far greater than even the most difficult truth. In this spoofy horror outing from veteran genre director Brian Yuzna, L.A. Law vet Corbin Bernsen plays Dr. Feinstone, an anal-retentive Beverly Hills dentist with an amusement park of an office replete with Planet Hollywood-worthy, themed exam rooms, piped-in opera music, and a crisp, efficient staff. When Feinstone finds out that his lovely wife, Brooke (Linda Hoffman), is fellating the pool boy, he becomes unhinged — haunted by visions of filthy mouths and faithless spouses. Inviting Brooke back to the office on their anniversary and begging her to indulge him in his hobby of cleaning her teeth, Feinstone performs a little unorthodox oral surgery and soon uses his now-disfigured sweetie to lure her boyfriend into a backyard trap. Revenge doesn’t cure Feinstone’s homicidal urges, however, and soon his violence and sexual obsessions spill over into his practice — especially after creepy IRS investigator Marvin Goldblum (Earl Boen) shows up for a little “I’ll scratch your back, you scratch mine.” Soon, patients and staff members alike are interacting with drills and laughing gas in ways they never expected. Filmed for, and originally shown on, HBO, The Dentist did not receive a U.S. theatrical release. Yuzna, Bernsen, and Hoffman reunited two years later for The Dentist II: Brace Yourself. ~ Brian J. Who Married Figaro?: A Book of Opera Characters

$0.66

Here is a marvelous guide to over 2,500 operatic characters, along with invaluable synopses of over 250 major works. Each entry provides a full description of the role, indicates its vocal category, and discusses who first created the part and other notable performers. Previously titled Who’s Who in Opera, this new edition has been revised and fully updated, with a fascinating new appendix of contemporary operas of the last ten years, including detailed synopses and world premiere cast lists, plus a list of opera-related web links. The book remains a gold mine of information on opera characters, ranging from brief identifications of minor characters to extensive multipage essays of major figures. Best of all, the volume boasts more than two dozen feature articles on major characters such as Brunnhilde and Violetta, written by well-known personalities who themselves constitute a who’s who of opera. Readers will find Placido Domingo writing on the character of Otello, perhaps his greatest role. Bryn Terfel writes on Leporello, Janet Baker on Mary Stuart, Thomas Hampson on Posa, and Theodore Uppman on Billy Budd. Other contributors include Andrew Porter, Sena Junnac, Philip Langridge, Jonathan Miller, Sir Charles MacKerras, and Marie McLaughlin. New to this edition are articles by America opera stars Christine Brewer and the charismatic Joyce DiDonato. Taken together, these special articles reveal much about the creative process behind some of the most famous performances in opera history. From Arabella to Wozzeck and from Aeneas to Zaida, here is a wealth of information on the main characters in the repertoire of both opera and operetta. Both informative and absorbing, it is a must for all opera lovers – an invaluable source of reference for professionals and amateurs alike, and a fascinating read for anyone curious about this beloved musical genre.
